Gods & Goddesses · Demeter and Persephone
Mother and daughter; perhaps one of the most intimate and complex relationships even to this day. Hades kidnapping of Persephone caused her mother Demeter great grief and she refused to let anything grow until she was reunited with her. Zeus had to negotiate and Persephone was forced to spend three months of the year with Hades in the underworld. During that time Demeter wouldn’t let anything grow on earth; it became known as winter.
